American Rita, 5, has recently moved from the US to coastal Scotland when she finally makes a friend in local boy Euan but soon hardship in the community will force her to navigate the margin between the world of children and adults.

‘I Before E’ directed by Paisley Valentine Walsh and co-written by Joanne Thomson and Nathalie Ahmadzadeh is a story about how loss affects a remote Scottish community. Told through the eyes of young Rita, the film follows the community’s youngest members as they experience and process such events. It is a sensitive and realist coming-of-age story that allows us to consider how we are shaped by our exposure to adversity and tenderness at a young age. ‘I Before E’ is a story about hope and the strength of children in the face of life’s hardest moments.

Filmed on location in Glasgow and Skye in January 2025, the project is currently in post-production.
