A Screen Academy Scotland Production
Dir: Jagoda Tłok | Producer: Jess Kelly
Two care workers from different backgrounds face the challenges of the private British care system and rebel in a way they can afford.
‘Care’ (2023) written and directed by Jagoda Tłok is a short narrative drama based on her first-hand experiences as a care worker. The film showcases the pressures and lack of support that come with the job, alongside the brokenness of the private care sector which prioritises profit over the wellbeing of vulnerable people. The film is also a tale of finding solidarity in unexpected places and within seemingly different people.
‘Care’ is an undergraduate graduation film from Screen Academy Scotland and was shot in March 2023 across 6 days and was made for only £4000 (funds raised kindly through crowdfunding donations). The filmmakers also received words of encouragement from Unison – the union representative of care workers in the UK. A full video of our conversation with care workers can be found on the films and respective filmmakers’ social media pages.
The programmers of Leeds International Film Festival described the film – “the muted and inconsequential meeting of new co-workers gloriously builds into a splendid rebellion, in the subtle yet endearing Care.”
The Skinny Magazine wrote “Care isn’t just last year’s best Scottish student film, it’s probably the best short film made in Scotland that year, period.”
